Regional Coordination and Participant Selection
Schedule and Timeline
outwardbound.jpgThis pilot-project is a partnership program between the Cree Nation Youth Council (CNYC) and OUTWARD BOUND CANADA. The project will be a 10-day Canoe Expedition that will merge Outward Bound’s Leadership and Life Skills development program.  The Canoe expedition is scheduled to take place from July 11 to 20, 2008 with departure from Outward Bound’s Base Camp in Burk’s Fall Ontario.

The CNYC is prepared to take the next step in advancing its land based projects for the Cree Nation Youth.  For this year, the plan is to work with Outward Bound to customize a Cree Nation-Outward Bound land based program.   This Cree Nation – Outward Bound partnership program that will feature;

  1. a flat water canoe expedition;
  2. a two-day student solo on the land while on expedition;
  3. a day of instructional rock climbing;
  4. sweat lodge ceremony; (optional)

The CNYC will partner with other Cree entities and continue to work with Outward Bound to design land based programs catered to the needs and aspirations of Cree Youth and to eventually bring these programs to be carried out in Eeyou Istchee.

“This powerful journey will help the youth build important strengths and assets within a distinct, cultural framework.  The course will provide an opportunity for young people to step away from the challenges in their lives for a moment and to learn some new skills that will assist them in life beyond this course.”   - Outward Bound Canada

OUTWARD BOUND CANADA

“An Outward Bound experience is a powerful and life-changing adventure.  It’s a rite of passage.  Whether you’re a young person on your first trek in the wild or a seasoned-professional facing new challenges out of your comfort zone, you’ll want to have some someone to depend on as your guide.”

Outward Bound works to promote self-reliance, adaptability, responsibility, confidence, integrity and persistence.   For these intensive programs to be successful, it’s crucial that each instructor be wilderness guide, role model, and teacher all rolled into one.  Outward Bound instructors are all adventurers in their own right – people who live their dreams both in and out of the wilderness.  They come to Outward Bound with life experience in a wide variety of professions, including teachings, health care, business, the arts and outdoor education.

Outward Bound is the industry leader in Wilderness Technical expertise, environmental practices, methods of experiential education, and safety procedures.  Safety in the backcountry is of paramount importance, and Outward Bound instructors continually upgrade their training in the latest instructional, safety, and rescue practices.  Outward Bound instructors also continue training to improve their certification in Wilderness First Aid and, on any white-water course, Swift-water rescue.  The training prepares them for appropriate field response to a wide variety of medical incidents. Some instructors are First Responders for backcountry emergencies.

The bottom line:  you’ll be in good hands with our instructors.  At Outward Bound Canada, safety is our number one priority.
