The purpose of the “Journey Through the Heart of Eeyou Istchee 2011” is to promote ‘Cancer’ awareness; remembering the ones that have gone before us and to work toward proactive measures in dealing with this disease in the Cree Nation.
The Journey will depart from Nemaska on January 15, 2011 and will travel through the Communities of Whapmagoostui, Chisasibi, Wemindji, Eastmain, Waskaganish, Waswanipi, Ouje-bougoumou, Mistissini and will return to Nemaska for its final arrival on March 31, 2011.
The CNYC will work with Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB), the Cree School Board (CSB) and the communities including the Youth Councils to develop educational material to educate members, and youth particularly, to better understand about the disease. The purpose of the educational material is to reduce the stigma of cancer, encourage professional assessment and treatment and to make people aware of the warning signs of cancer.
We will work with the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB), Communities including the Youth Councils to plan and organize seminars and workshops in order for people to better understand this disease and to work towards proactive measures to address it. The seminars/workshops will also serve to train people and youth particularly as volunteers to present educational material to various organizations including schools. These seminars/workshops will also provide an opportunity for professionals to be educated about this disease such as risk assessment and community-based cancer prevention.
